A Melbourne cable to-day says that Munieet, with 9.3 up, won the special weight race at Sandown Park. She ran attractively, beating Northwood and Verenice. Deeley, who last season rode for Mr E. J. Watt, of Hawke's Bay, is having a great run in Auckland. At Takapuna. on the opening day, Deeley performed : the hat trick, winning on Celerity, Scotty and Castadrift in succession. Deeley has now passed S. Reid .in the list of winning jockeys, having 36 wins to his credit. _ The little Conqueror geiding William has been sold by Mr J. Monk for a satisfactory figure. William is useful over a mile, and at the AVairaiape meeting defeated both Moloch and San Julie. The form of both these horse* at Trentham makes William out a fair sort. H. W. Holmes, one of the oldest and leading cross-country riders in South Australia, recently remarked thet mo3t of the riders viewed with alarm the intended padding of steeplechase fences. Holmes considers that more srrions accidents will happen under the new conditione. The rapping of a fence always made a horse —especially a young one— more careful at the following obstacles, and. on the other hand, a horse always took undue liberties with obstacle* when it was discovered that .there was any give in them. According to Holmes, the padding of the fences will mean a great saving to the legs of the horses, bet this end will be gained at the expense of greater risks to the jockeys.
