" ,- LONDON, February 12. § The Times' Lisbon correspondent as-.'; sorts that the plot of January 28 was"; organised with the tacit if not the active connivance of the Republicans and Monarchists. Yet three days later Senhor Franco, despite the ominous complicity of the population, induced King Carlos to sign a decree for the initiation; of what was practically a " Star Chamber." The assassinations followed immediately. The Times' Lisbon correspondent comments on the incredible equanimity wherewith the assassinations are regarded by the population. The Standard's correspondent says.-that, the regicide is a justifiable),. act and no real effort is being made to discover the accomplices. Subscriptions : are being raised' for the assassins' families and Republican news- ! papers demand the criminal prosecution of the late King Carlos' equerry who I sabred one of the assassins. According to. some accounts the public feel that Senhor Franco was too precipitate in abolishing official sinecures. He endeavoured to divide the parties and then rule as dictator.
