Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Feb. 12. At the Police Court yesterday, William Booth, a young man, was charged with having, on January 31st,, stolen £6 and an umbrella valued at 5s from Henry Hill, ' and also with having assaulted Hill. The evidence of the complainant, who is a veterinary surgeon, was to the effect that he and accused had four drinks together, and that while going along the street afterwards accused asked him for money, witnesß refusing. Complainant alleged that the accused then assaulted and robbed him. Accused reserved his defence and was committed for trial.
MASTERTON, Feb. 11. In response to the request of residents, the Education Department has decided to erect a school at Lansdowne. The building will be a brick one, and plans for the work are being prepared. Bush fires are raging between Eketahuna and Pahiatua, on both sides of the railway line, and a number of settlers' houses are in danger. Mr McBarron's house at Mangamahoe was destroyed through a bush fire on Monday afternoon. The house was insured fo* £300 and the furniture for £500. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 12. The number of stock which passed through Addington saleyard* in 1907 was 673,221 sheep, 25,116 pigs, and 27,078 cattle, being an increase on 1906 of 67,000 sheep and a decrease of 2000 pigs and 1700 cattle. »
