HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held at Levin on Saturday. Present—Cirs. Richards (chairman), Freeman, Watson, Tompsitt, Davies, McLoavey, Venn, Stephenson, and Prouse. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From J. R. Stanscll and others, requesting the Council to take steps to acquire the land between the bridge over the Otaura Creek and the bridge in courso of erection over the Manawatu river near the Shannon ferry, and so shorten the distance between Shannon and the Manawatu bridge. ' By taking a road through., this land it would be advantageous, and be less liable to floods. —Decided to make. further enquiries, the engineer to get probable cost of straightening the Shannon ferry road, and ascertain advantage to be gained. From M. O'Reilly and W. Stubbs, for- ! warding accounts for expenses incurred in connection with the Hautere waterrace compensation case.—Put. on the paysheet and finally passed for payment. . From G. M. Burlinson (Weraroa State Farm), drawing attention to the dangerous state of the road near Pink's. — Left to the engineer to attend to. From Valuation Department, stating they were engaged in re-valuing the Te Horo riding, and asking that someone be appointed as a member of the Assessment Court on behalf of the Council.— Mr Walter Best elected. From C. Nodine, asking for a fence (as agreed upon) to be erected at Te Horo, to prevent cattlo crossing the water-race. —To be attended to. From C. B. Robinson, asking that settlers bordering the Buckley stream be given notice to clean same. —Agreed to. From Bell, Gully and Cooper, asking for titles, to enable them to register certain dealings from Mrs Gardner to Dunn and others. —Referred to Mr O. Gardner, the Council disclaiming delay in" returning the titles. From A. Burling, asking for thirds to be spent on the road leading to his house. —Agreed to. From Manawatu Council, stating they were in possession of several certificates from Mr Fulton for progress payments on Shannon bridge, and asking for statement showing the total amount paid on the woi'k by the Council to date, and also the proportion due by the Manawatu Council. Delay had arisen in getting the loan for the bridge, but a cheque would be forwarded in a day or so. —Information to,be supplied. From John Hadfield (Wanganui), offering enlarged photograph, as per wish of Council, for adornment of Council walls. . ■•.' , From Wellington Charitable "Aid Board and Wellington Hospital Board forwarding accounts for £67 8s 4d and £245 9s 7d respectively, and requesting cheques, being instalment due for quacrter. From J. P. Innes, stating that Mr Englis had signed the transfer of Pretoria Road and forwarding plan. An account of £30 was received from Mr Laing-Meason for expenses in connection with the Hautere water-race cas'e. He offered to deduct £4 5s Bd, as the expenses to the Council had been heavy. From Skerrett and Wylie, enclosing copy of notes on the Hautere water-race case, and offering to forward copies of awards when ready. From H. Butt, resigning position of surfaceman. —Accepted. From R. McKay, stating he had expended over £1000 in rates on property at Linton, and yet jio money had been spent on his roads.—The matter to be attended to. From C. F. Johnston, drawing attention to bad state of Foxton-Levin road. —Left to engineer. From J. Marchbanks, offering to sell 11 rail girders, 22ft span.—t)ecided to enquire re price. From C, M. Richards, asking to lease reserve at SJiannon. —Already let, but Council willing to sell. From Shannon ratepayers, asking to ihave metalling of Stafford Street finished. —Left over. RESOLUTIONS. Venn —Stephenson.—That the Makerua Estate Co. be informed that since receipt of their agreement Council has ascertained that there are already dwellings on the land served by the road in question, and therefore cannot legally suspend fne Act. Prouse —McLeavey.—That permission be given Vagg and Black to divert water-race' at Levin.

MoLeavey—Watson.—That the owners of trees overhanging the road bo given notice to cut same. Several roads in the county were scheduled as main roads. , Decided to call fresh tenders for Rikio-rangi-Mangaone road, to be in by 25(;h, councillors for riding to deal - with same. The tender of Winter and Close for work on tho LeviniKereru road at 6s 6d per yard, and for Foxton-Levih road at 10s per yard was accepted. Decided that £5 be voted towards the preliminary expenses of' the proposed Oroua and Manawatu River Board. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Te Horo Riding.—All satisfactory. Arrangements were made for the expenditure of Government grant of £100 on Waikanao beach road. Otaki. —All roads in good order, and nothing demanding special attention, unless a groyne was inserted at southern end of Waikanae bridge. Wirokino. —Subway finished, but. approaches rather steep. Victoria Terrace metalled and road at end widened.

Beach Road metalling done, and the road now in good order. Tokomaru-Shannon-Buckley Road- metalling fiinshed and road now in good order, and good progress made with streets.
