It is reported that Mr S.M., who has been senior magistrate in Southland for over seven years, will be transferred to Napier after Christmas. Solomon N. Ziman, B.Sc., the only Auckland applicant for the Rhodes Scholarship, has been chosen for candidature. He is aged 21 and was educated at Wellington Clyde Quay School and in Auckland. He won a foundation scholarship at the age of 11, and went to Auckland Grammar School. Mrs Henry, wife of Staff-Captain Henry, officer in charge of the local Salvation Army, has just returned from a three months' visit to Queensland. That State was in a political turmoil when Mrs Henry was there. The Philp Government, being without a majority in the House, had been unable to pass supplies before a dissolution was granted. The result was that no Government employee could bo paid, and it was expected that three months would elapse before salaries could again be paid. Mr W. J. Hall, the well-known civil engineer, of Dunedin, died yesterday morning from the after effects of influenza. Deceased came to New Zealand in 1864, and in 1875 he was appointed Government District Surveyor in Southland, holding that appointment for two years. He was also contract surveyor in Canterbury for three years. In 188S he went to Melbourne and returned to New Zealand in 1894, and occupied the position of Resident Engineer in connection with Hawera and Masterton waterworks. He also acted professionally for the Dunedin City Council and Roslyn and Mornington Borough Councils.
