VALEDICTORY.

On Friday evening last the students of the art department of the Palmerston North Technical School terminated their year's work with a social, and at the same time took the opportunity of showing their appreciation of the labours on their behalf of their master, Mr G. H. Elliott, A.M., who is leaving shortly on an extended holiday to England and the Continenf. During the two years Mr Elliott has been in charge of the local art school it. has made rapid progress, solely owing to his splendid fitness for the position he holds, and to his unremitting energy in furthering the interests of the school aiid the students. During the evening Mr Elliott was presented by his students with a handsome travelling bag, and one and all expressed their sorrow at his departure and the wish that he might have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in the Old Land. • - In accepting the presentation, Mr Elliott made feeling reference to the happy relations which had existed between master and . students, and also between himself and the members of the High School staff, and expressed the hope th'at on his return to Palmerston-he would i have become thoroughly restored to health, and with the fresh experience gained at Home bo better equipped for his duties as master of a growing art school. A short programme was contributed to by the following gentlemen:—Messrs J. C. Pearce, J. Davidson, Spencer Watson, Ray Horn, W. Richardson and F. Edwards. Mr Eric Watson played the accompaniments. Refreshments were partaken of, and the singing of "Auld Lang Sync" terminated a pleasant evening. The piano was kindly lent by Messrs Collier and Co.

A presentation of a handsome silvermounted pipe was made at the High School to Mr C. Just by' the teaching staff- r Reference was made to the .splendid' order in which Mr Just had kept the grounds and general regret was expressed at his leaving. Mr Just has taken up a farm in the Auckland district, for which place he left to-day. His place will be taken by Mr Leet.
