Two young ladies were bathing at the mouth of the Matapouri river, when they were carried off their feet by the rapid tide into deep water. .Mrs Pullman. was bathing with them and went to their rescue. She caught hold of them, but could not regain the shore. Mrs Clements, who was riding past, dismounted and plunged in fully dressed. She got the girls on to a rock, and their cries for help brought down Mr Clements, who was rafting further up the- river, and the party was rescued from their perilous position.
