Mr W. T. Wood, M.H.R., received word on Saturday night that his daughter, Mrs Aslrton, who was lying ill at Geraldine, was beginning 'to improve, though still in a rather serious condition.

The many friends of Mr G. Y. Canton, borough overseer, of Cartel ton,' will regret to hear that he is at present confined to his bed with a severe attack of appendicitis. We trust Mr Canton will have an early recovery.

The battlefield of Te Ngutu o te Manu, near Okaiawa, in South Taranaki, was-'recently visited by a sister of Major von Tempsiiy. It was on this battlefield that the gallant Major lost Irisr life in a fight- with the Meoris under the fighting chief Titokowaru. During her visit, von Tempsky's sister was presented with a greenstone axe, which was ploughed out near the spot where her illustrious brother lost his life.

On Wednesday afternoon Miss Jean Urquhart, eldest daughter of Mr John Urquhait, Lands and Survey Department, was married to Mr Munro McKenzie, of Raumai, Palmerston North The wedding took place at St. James' Church, the Itev. W. Shirer officiating. The bride was assisted by her sisters, Misses Nina and Ruby. Mr Frank Sinclair acted as best man, and Mr Harry Urquhart as groomsman.— Post. The Bishop has appointed the Rev. H. W. Klingender, of Palmerston, to be vicar of Waimate Plains. In £L reference to the appointment the Parish Magazine says:—"Mr Klingender • ill leave in August for his new work, or earlier if the vicar can hear of anyone to take his place. He has now been here for three and a half years, and, together with Mrs Klingender, lias worked well for the church in this parish. They will carry with them the best wishes and prayers of parishioners here for their new work "
