ASSESSMENT COURT.

Another adjavinement of the Assessment Court was necessary_ for - a I time this morning, as \\ hen it first i sat, at 10 o'clock, the President, Mr ! A. D. Thomson, S.M., had to announce that no appointment, had yet been made in place of Mr W. Stubbs, who had been declared ineligible to sit. He understood, however, that the Kairanga County Council was having a special meeting to make an appointment, and therefore would adjourn the Court for an hour to permit of the attendance of the new assessor. The Court resumed at 11.30, when Mr T. R. Hodder, the County's nominee, took his seat on the Bench with the S.M. and Mr Campbell. A fairly long list of objections to the valuation of properties in the Kairanga Council's district was read over, but very few ratepayers put in an appearance. The objections that were unsupported were struck out. Francis Thornley appeared, and said he had not been allowed enough for the improvements to his property on Rangitikei Line; £4 per acre was not anything like enough. The capital value would not bear an in- ; crease, but he would like something to hen off the unimproved value and added to the improvements. In reply to Mr Gardner, the Distiict Valuer, he said the improvements were worth £12 an acre. The objection was dismissed. Peter Peterson objected that the capital value placed on his property Avas not £2081, as it would not fetch that sum on "the market. He also wanted the amount allowed for improvements increased. The Valuer objected to the increase, on the improvements. The S.M. pointed out to the objector that if the improvements were raised by £150, as asked, the capital value would also have to go up by that amount This did not meet with approval, and the valuation was sustained. J. Bennett objected to the capital valuation and also the amount allowed for improvements on his sections at Awahuri. He said too much had been put cn the unim proved value. The land would not sell for the £26 10s per acre it was vt.lued at. The Court decided to make the improvements £150 instead of £72, and to let the capital value stand at £584. (Left sitting.)
