DUNEDIN, June 7
The Minister of Lands has written to Mr Mackenzie, M.H.R., stating that the state of the State lime-kilns at Shag Valley is such that they will either have to be sold or closed. AUCKLAND, June 8. Leopold Muir, the young man arrested on his arrival from Wellington and charged with threatening to shoot a young woman in Auckland, and remanded from time to time, was examined by a doctor, who certified him to be quite sane. Muir, who said he did not remember making any threats, was convicted and-bound over to keep the peace for twelve months, in securities of £25 each and his own bond of £50. CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. The first severe frost of the. season was experienced this morning. Vegetation was everywhere covered deeply with white rime. To-day it is beautifully fine, with bright sunshine. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, George Francis Henry received a month's imprisonment for theft of £5 odd from a woman who gave it to him to send by money-order. Henry Rowley, on charges of forging and uttering cheques, pleaded guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. GREYMOUTH, June 8. The results of the fourth week of the New Zealand Poultry Journal's duck egg-laying competition are: — Scott and Wareham 23, Lucy 15, Knight 14, Downthwaite 14, Penbery 13. The best to date are : —Knight 68, Scott and Wareham 60, Woodward 35. Total for the week, 113; to date, 289. At the S.M. Court, Thomas Keating, charged with being in possession of £100 worth of opium, was fined £35 and costs.
