CHURCH AND STATE.
OBSTRUCTING THE SOLDIERS
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Per Press Association. PARIS, Nov. 21. The French populace offered considerable resistance in Brittany and elsewhere to the Government officials making inventories of church 1 property. A heap of sulphur was fired inside a church at Pignan, necessitating breaking the windows to expel the fumes. Men then climbed the roof and tried to feed the flames with sulphur. Women execrated and obstructed the firemen whose services were sought. At other places the tocsin summoned the populace, who gave the troops much trouble. A parish priest at Couronne lay across the threshold of the outer door until removed. No fatalities are reported. In the Chamber of Deputies, M. Clemenceau stated there were 2000 inventories still uncompleted. The troops would be patient, but would shoot if shot at.
