Manawatu itaces* Second Day. ■ -mm# ■ Wet weather prevailed again yesterday, and any chance the Manawatu Racing Club had of pulling up the totalisator deficiency of the previous day, as compared with the corresponding day last yeari Was lost by the continucd rain, which again matcrialty affected tho attendance and speculation, though yesterday's investments exceeded those of the previous day by it small sum, i's4. The total amount handled during the two days waa £18,618, a decrease of ii!B99 on the total put through last year, £20,517. Bar tho weather the meeting was as successful as on previous occasions, tho racing being good and the meeting capably and methodically conducted by tho executive, who were most assiduous in their attention to duty. Special reference must be made in this .particular to tho good work of Mr J. M. Johnston, the secretary, and his staff. Mr A. Keith again handled his fields in a capable manner, all his despatches being in really excellent style, one or two particularly so. " Sport was of the best, tj&veral of the -finishes being remarkably dose, notably ,in the big handicap, in which the judge was unable to separate the first two horses, Melodeon and Bohheur, the' Fitzherberfc Hurdles and the Hack Flying rnce. Local horses were very successful, Bonheur, Rosewood, Tangimoana, &pd Barcft, each being trained or owned in PalraerstQn. All the acceptors went to tViu post hi tho Borough Handicap, the opening event of the second day. Stronghold, who was brackcttcu with Chryseis, was sent out favourite, Sir Tristram running Southern pair very close in public estimation. The latter with Sir Tristram were first out of the tapes and they led to the five furlong post where the Hawke's Bay horse shot out a length in front. Gawain followed him and the pair put a couple of lengths between them and the rest of tbe field. At the home turn the rest of the starters made their effort but made no impression upon the leaders, who finished four lengths m front of the third horse, King Billy. Stronghold finished fourth and Flotilla fifth. Armamento, a southern-bred inmate of W. Da vies' stable, scored a run away win in the Hack Flying, and it is difficult to account for his defeat by Wailethe in the R'arere Welter on tbe first day. On bis running in the race he won he was decidedly unlucky to lose the first day. A good.race took place for places between Truce, Clementine and Probability, necks only separating them on the post. Lady Wayward was in the ruck all the way. All- the acceptors went to the post in the Autumn Handicap, Lyrist being installed favourite. Mussel and Roseal were away first and" they led the field abreast to the back stretch where Melodeon was last, a clear length behind the others. Mussel and Roseal still held first place when heads were turned for home, but at the uistance Bonheur and Melodeon, who had made up ground around the top turn, put in their claims. Bonheur cut down each of the leaders, and opposite the stand appeared to have tbe race won, but thirty yards from home Melodeon camo with a rush that took him up on level terms with Bonheur on the post. Roseal and Mussel were close up third and fourth. Flamen ran well and held a good position to the turn for home, where he was chopped out and finished just in front cif Lyrist. Many people incline to the opinion that Melodeon won. There were only four starters in the Tiritea Hurdles, Hydrant having no difficulty in settling Flanagan after the latter had led all the way and over the last hurdle. Half a mile from home Atmdeja appeared as she would take a hand in tbe final settlement but she died away at the top turn, leaving Durban to run into third place.

Another fipld of four faced tbe starter in the Fitzherberfc Hurdle race, St. Lyra being a strong favourite. Kobunui was first away and he Jed tbe field for nearly a mile, jumping and galloping well. St. Lyra and Dalkey then took up the running, the latter length in front around the back stretch, Defoe and Kobunui on equal terms a length behind St. Lyra, Over the last hurdle the field, were bunched but St. Lyra drew out on landing and ran home an easy winner from Defoe, who beat Kohunui a length for second place. Dalkey was a length away last. Tbe* Palmerston - trained Rosewood gave his field no chance in the Maiden Hack Scurry jumping* out of the tapes I with a good break and winning by four lengths easily from The Dane who car- | ried a lot of money both at and atvay from the course. I A good-looking field went out for the Juvenile Handicap, and the evont was one of" tbe best on the programme. Victory rested with the Palmerston owner, Mr D. Buick, who scored his first win' after racing most pluckily for the past -three season?. Tangimoana, who scored, is a quality-looking daughter of San Fran and Waingongoro and was purchased by Mr Buick at one of the Hawke's Bay Bales. Coming at the right time in her race she brried the field and saw borne a comfortable winner by a length from Glenowlet who was conceding her throe stone. Tbe locally-trained English Channel ran into third place. Another locally-trained horse, Barca, appropriated the final event of the meet-, ing, scoring in handsome style from Pretty Maid, who appeared to possess a winning chance at the stewards'stand. Operetta was close up third. Whakawehi was shut in on the rails along the back stretch, and coming out on the outside could not make up lost ground, • 'finishing just in front of Chryseis, who was last.
