Mauaw&tu Races. First Day. During the afternoon yesterday tho weather improved greatly and sport was . .participated, in under very much more favourable circumstances than during the early part of the proceedings. The mischief had, however, been done, and the attendance at no time approached ■ . that of last year. Speculation, however, was brisk, a total of £9282 passing through the machine, only £669 less last vcar, when the circumstances were ?.I1 favourable. Racing throughout the day was most interesting;, some remarkably good finishes btingwifcnesscd. Mr Angus Keith officiated as starter for the Club and made no mistakes, all his despatches being really excellent, the start in the Taikorea Welter earning him the plaudits of the spectators on v -the lawn.. Proceedings commenced with the Telograph Stakes, from which Maraurite was the only withdrawal. The public fastened on to Sir Gcraint as the beat of good things, sending him out a hot favourite. The gelding got away well and led for a furlong, and then gave place to Sir Tristram, who led • round tho far turn a length in front of Sir Ger&int. At the home turn Gawain and King Billy joined issue, but were not able to pace it with Sir Tristram, who simply romped home four lengths in front of Gawain, half a length in front of King Billy. Sir Geramt was fourth and then Solution. Stronghold was last. A field of thirteen went to the post in the Karere Handicap, Devonia, a Porirua representative, being installed favourite. Wangaehu showed out first, and she led her field to the four-furlong post at a tmart bat, where Wailetbe raced up on even terms, Armamento a length behind. Wangaehu dropped out at the home turn, Wailetho leading into the straight, a couple of lengJjhViu front of Armamento, who had Aorangi at his girths. Wailcthe had no difficulty in shaking off Armamento, and won easily by two lengths, Aorangi close up third. There were six starters in the Mauawatu Stakes, Achilles as might easily be imagined going out a red-hot favourite. Zimmerman was next in demand and then Loftus and Glenowlet, who were evenly backed. The start was delayed by Petticoat and Zimmerman, and when the tapes were released the latter reared up and 4 lost several lengths. Achilles was quickest on his, feet and was the first to show out in front. Before a furJong had been traversed Loftus and Glenowlet were on even terms with him and the trio raced on even terms to the , three furlong post, several lengths in front of the rest. Rounding the far turn Achilles fell back' a length but made up his ground on the outside rounding the bend. With heads turned for home he had disposed of Glenowlet but Loftus stuck to him till opposite the stewards' stand when the chestnut drew out aud won easily by two lengths, Glenowlet a length and a half away third. Zimmerman was fourth. Barca was the only absentee from the Longburn Handicap. Mussel took charge from the start and Jed bis field soveral lengths to the three-furlong post, where Lyrist, Melodeon and Roseal closed up on him. The former led into the straight and won very comfortably from Roseal who ran into second place at the top turn, where Flotilla also was prominent with Bonbeur. Tho latter came very fast from the distance and beat Melodeon for third p'ace by half a length. Apifci, Lionheart and Anadeja were withdrawn from the Linton Hurdles. Hydrant had no difficulty in scoring from Flanagan, who was four lengths in front of Durban. Inglewood and Knave broke bloodvessels and were each pulled up. Mimilia was never in the hunt. Despite Jier 171b penalty earned by her double win at Taranaki, St. Lyra - had no _ difficulty in scoring in the 'Hokowhitu Hurdles, winning easily after 3}alkey had made the running for -i . mile .and threequarters. The mare "did not jump too well but had too much pace for the rest of the field. A great finish took place between Defoe, Dalky and ICohunui, the latter scoring by a neck, the same narrow . margin separating the other two. The scratching pen was freely used in the, Champion Hack Plate, Moloch, Maui, Sylvan Tide, Wailethe, Armamento, Scotch Reel, and Aorangi each declining their engagements. A splendid start . was effected Lady Wayward, Tupono, and Contender showing out in front on level terms and they raced thus to the five furlong post, where Ellerton and Mobility had closed up with them. The latter two were in front at the distance and a great race home resulted in favour of Ellerton by a head, Jenkins' judgment and ability contributing materially to tho result. • The winner was coupled with his stable mate Merriwai. Souneo; and Mobility were the only withdrawals from the Taikorea Welter race. The top weight had his field settled half a mile from home winning with ease from Operetta who got badly away. Barca came with a fast late run that carried him into third place. Chryseis was prominent to the home turn and then dropped back beaten.
