Ihe Department of Industries and " Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, - \ dated London, March 31st: — _ " The stocks of mutton on hand a*e> light, but poor business only is being done owing to price?, being* too high. " There is a scarcity of prime quality • mutton, though 20,000 carcases are due* The average price of Canterbury mutton is 4|d; other New Zealand J brands than Canterbury, 4£d; Australian, 3d; Biver Plate, 3{d. There is better demand for lamb, and low prices are ruling. The average price | to-day fpr Canterbury brand is sid; * brands other than Canterbury od. These prices are ruling for besft quality only. Inferior lots are selling at 4d. " market is quiet. 1 . Stocks ' of New* Zealand beef are light and the average prices ruling are 3 3-fcd and 3sd for hind and fore quarters respec- ' tively. "The butter market is dull, unfavourably affeeted by the large quantities on hand of medium qualify. There is a general active demand for best quality. The average price of choice New Zealand butter is 99s per cwt, Australian, 935, Danish 113s. " The cheese market is steady and the demand does not abate. WLite is . quoted at 63s per cwt . A great scarcity exists of coloured, which is at 66s per cwt. , "The hemp market is rather unsettled, the price of g.f.a.q. Wellington on spot to-day is £32 per ton; - April-June shipments £31 per ton; • Manila.—Fair current-on spot to-day - „ is quoted at £1010s per ton. " Cocksfoot—The market in quiet, but firm, and there is uo change in 1 . prices to report."
