Accidents and Fatalities.
Two IJlaejackets Injured. AUCKLAND, March 29. Au accident happened at Calliope Dock this to two sailors belonging to H.M.S. Encounter, and one of tnem is at present in a critical condition. It appears that a part of bluejackets were engaged in hauliug up a target by means of a capstan in the dockyard. One of the capstan poles snapped, aud struck au able seaman named Swanton on the back of the head, inflicting serious injuries. His head was cut open, aud he was picked up unconscious. Another seaman named Bailey was struck across the stomach by the pole, but his injuries serious. Swanton was still unconscious this afternoon, and his condition is re- , gardeil as serious. . ! AUCKLAND, This dav. The sailor Swanton, who was injured Yesterday at the Calliope dock, died last evening on H.M.S. Encounter. ; PONGAROA, March 29. A two-year-old son of Mr S. RWeatherley was, accidentally poisoned with strychnine yesterday WAIHI, March 30. A man named Alexander Polly, who hud.been suffering from insomnia, took , - an overdose of laudanum and lies m a i' critical condition.
