EDUCATION DISTRICTS.

One of the measures passed last.session affecting this district is that which provides ror the division of the education districts into three wards, each returning three members, instead of nine members of the Board being returned ! by the vote of the whole district as was the law hitherto. One corollary of the division of the district is that the wards shall be on the basis of the yearly average of the school attendance, asd that the attendance in each ward shall be as nearly as possible the same, subject to the provision that schools with more than 420 children shall only count as that number. A committee of the Wanganui Education Board was appointed to prepare a draft division to be submitted to next meeting of the Board, and the difficulties met with were very great. In the northern end, down to and including Wanganui, the numbers were too large, so that a detour had to be made round Wanganui, after the style of the old Patea electorate, to obtain the requisite number. Then a difficulty arose about the central district, which included Wanganui and had to be brought right down to the outskirts of Feilding. The southern district includes Feilding ; Palmerston and Eoxton, which now have four resident members, but which number will eventually be reduced to three. The Act, however, contains a flaw, no provision having been made for the whole of the members of the Board to go out of office, and thus the election in May next will apply only to the threeretiring members of the Board. j The proposed districts will be best understood by pub.ishing the-names of the school districts in each ward, which are as follows:— Northern Ward.—Ararata, Opaku, Motoroa, Mangamingi, Fraser Road, Kakaramea, Kohi, Mangawhero, Manutahi, Meremere, Mokoia.Ngatamapouri, Te Roti, Whakamara, Alton, Hurleyville, Maxwell, Otakeho, Rawhitiroa, Riverlea, Whenuakura, Auroa, Kapuni> Matapu, Momohaki, Waitotara, Kaponga.
