« , j (Per Prf-ss Association) AUCKLAND, This day. Captain Southgate was charged at the Police Court this morning with manslaughter in connection with the Claymore—Kapanui collision, and was remanded to Friday, bail being allowed. A special sitting of the Court was held to-day to deal with the case of the man John Francis Usher, charged with seyeral thefts. A large quantity of stolen property has been found in his possession. It is alleged that the thefts totalled £I*l9. Since his arrest accused has behaved in a most violent manner, but the Asylum and gaol doctors, after carefub observation, concluded that U"sher was malingering. The case is proceeding. DUNEDIN, Jan. 25. Mrs Barbara McLellan, widow, 54, of North East Valley, died suddenly to-day. The cause of death was apparently heart disease. ASHBURTON, This day. At the Magistrate's Court, Thomas Paterson was committed for trial at Timaru for alleged perjury while giving evidence in a recent sly-grog selling case. WELLINGTON, This day. The body of a man between thirtyfive and forty years of age, name unknown, was found in the harbour near the Queen's Wharf to-day.
