CHRISTCHURCH, November 24,

A writ for slander and defamation of character has been issued against a resident of Harewood road, on behalf of Mr T. H. Caverhill, one of the candidates for Kiccavton. The alleged slander consists in a statement said to have been made, to the effect that Mr Caverhill's resignation from the bank was brought about through drunkenness. Mr Caverhill claims that there has never been even a suspicion that he was intemperate at any period of his life, and that ho had been a total abstainer for over eleven years, having first become a teetotaller as an example to the Kaiapoi football team when training them for the senior championship, which they won under his management in 1894. Defendant was afforded the option of apologising, but did not avail himself of it.

Anxiety is felt for the safety of two fishermen, Danielson and Watson, who left here in a small boat on Tuesday at midnight, intending to return on Wednesday, but have not since been heard of.

At a special meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board to-day Mr Leslie Reynold's proposals re the improvements of the harbour were considered. It was resolved that the board at once proceed ■with the construction of- a training wall along the line of the south spit. The estimated cost of this work is £11 950 ASHBURTON. November 24. Eighteen informations against nine persons for alleged sly-grog selling were called and on the application of the police were adjourned for a week.
