The Department of Industries and Commerce have received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London 18th:—The mutton market is quiet, but steady and favourable conditions continue. The average price today for Canterbury mutton is 3Jd; other. North Island mutton 3Jd. A better tone is noticeable in the lamb market this week, stock being reduced. There is an endeavour amongst the holders to raise the price of lamb. The average price to-day for New Zealand lamb is: Canterbury brand4£d; brands other than Canterbury 4d. The average price to-day for Australian lamb is 4d.
The beef market is steadier. The average price to-day for hindquarters New Zealand beef is 3|d, and forequarters 2fd.
The butter market is firm. Butter by the Turakina arrived in good condition and there was a ready sale. The average price to-day for choicest New Zealand bntter is 112s to 114s per cwt. The cheese market is in fair demand. Canadian is quoted at 595. The hemp market is quiet with a tendency in . favour of buyers. There is scarcely any demand for cocksfoot seed. Average price to-day for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171bs per bushel, on the spot is "pis' per cwt.
