Mr Joseph Brewer won a prize of £100 in Tattersall's "Melbourne sweep. Several other residents in the district have won smaller amounts.

For the first time in the history of the Pacing Club, open events are included in the programme. In branch ing out in this direction the club forfeits the title of the premier hack racing club of New Zealand, a title the club won and held for many years. The alteration is necessitated by the large amount of stakes the club is offering.

Just novr it is politics for breakfast, dinner and tea, and some sleep with them under the pillow. Even the cows are giving more milk. No less than iive candidates address meetings here, all of whom are anxious, willing and wrestling to serve their bleeding country. By the time they have finished wooing us, and their arguments have soaked in, and the prohibitionists and trade have beamed upon us, and sweetly whispered in our ears, we shall, well, be mixed up some. If things don't shake themselves out a bit before judging day we shall find Orouaites rushing to vote for Palmerston candidates, and Palmerstoniahs rushing to " Orouaite," prohibitionists will be crossing out the bottom line, and the trade will be hanging on to clause 9 with one hand and striking out the top line with the other. However, it comes onty once in three j'ears, but while it lasts it's jolly interesting.
