(From Our Own Correspondent). FOXTON, NovrlS.
Mrßimmer, contractor for tbe new school building, has made a start with the erection of the building. A large quantity of timber has been stored on the grounds and the men have been busily engaged for the past week in getting things ready for a 6tart. The concrete foundations have been partly laid and tile end of this week should sse that part of the contract almost completed. The building is being erected on the opposite side of the ground to the old building and faces the east. In the next notes a description of the building will be given.
Mr 1. Fake, of Palmerston North, has secured the contract to replace iv concrete the Avenue-road culvert, which recently collapsed after the heavy rains. The new culvert will not lie in the same place as the old wooden one, but closer to the windmill and it crosses the road more diagonally. The Borough day men are doing the excavating work and have made a good start, in consequence of the work the road is closed to vehicular and horse traffic for the time being. Large quantities of whii ebait have made their appearance in the liver during the last two or three days, and large catches are reported. Three fishers are said to have secured thirteen tins each on Wednesday. The fish realised seventeen or eighteen shillings a tin in "Wellington, so the catches represent a fair sum to the fishermen. The afternoon's amusement includes fa greasy boom, a barrel race, fishermen's race in licensed boats, swimming races, and rowing races in tha Club's outriggers. Good progress is being made with the building for Cbung Wah in Main-street. The front part is in brick and the back in wood.
Th» Foxton Athletic Club expects to clear between £15 and £20 over its last meeting. The membership of the Club totals somewhere in the ' vicinity of ninety, and the officers expect the Club to be even more advanced next year.
