Briefly told the plot is as follows :—Wilfred Hilton (Mr A. H. Smith) a young officer, is engaged to Nellie Cautley (Miss Mollie Davidson) the daughter of Robertson Cautley (Mr W. Cronin) a man of wealth and position. Every arrangement for the wedding is completed, when, through the machination of Arthur Palmer (Mr H. Glubb), a scoundrel' who aspires to possession of the girl's fortune, Hilton is denounced as an intending bigamist and the nuptial ceremony is suspended. Color is lent to Palmer's misstatement by the production of a forged marriage certificate. The villain is aided in his nefarious schemes by Lola Nevarro (Miss Irene Carlyon) a French woman with a past. In days gone by there had been a love passage between this woman and Hilton but the latter having found her unworthy discarded her, left Scotland and went to London. Palmer plays upon Lola's affection for Hilton and arou»es her jealously until the maddened woman aids him in frustrating the marriage as before stated. A subsequent meeting takes place between Hiiton and Lola outside St. Paul's Cathedral. Tho French woman's true nature asserts itself. She relents and haviug prepared a written confession of tho plot to ruin Hilton, she agrees to place it and tho forged marriage lines in Nellie Cautloy's hands. Hilton leaves her momentarily to fetch a cab. Palmer has shadowed the pair and kills the woman to prevent exposure and to obtain the incriminating documents in her possession. He is interrupted in his searchforthem and Hies. The papers are recovered by Cherry Chatterton (Mrs H. Glubb) his wife's sister who uses them as a means of conipelling Palmer's proper recognition of his wife. Hilton returns with-the cab and is found by the body. He is convicted on circumstantial evidence and sent to penal servitude for life. He escapes from pnsou with the assistance of Jock Shearer (Mr Barrio Marschel) and seeks refuge at Cantlcy's house. Palmer pursues him there and denounces him. to an officer of the law, but just at the moment when villainy appears triumphant news of her sister's death reaches Cherry, and having no object for further concealment she speaks out and produces the papers, with the result that vice is effectively sat upon and virtue reigns triumphant.
