Wairarapa v. Manawatu.
(Per Press Association.) "MASTERTON,. September 16.. Wairarapa and Manawatu played their annual match at Greytown to-day. Manawatu had a weak team, being without the services of Stalker;. Hewitt, Smith, and Furrie. They had to fill up a place in the backs with "Snip" Allen, an ex-Taranaki rep. In the first spell,, playing up-hill against the wind and suu,. Maiuiwatu were on the defence nearly all the time. For Wairarapa Wrigley and Beard scored in this spell. Both tries were converted. From bad play on thepart of Williams, Wairarapa full-back^ Archie^ McMinn scored an- easy try forthe visitors, which was not converted. On changing round Manawatu were attacking for the best part of the spell, the forwards holding their "own. But the Wairarapa backs/with the exception of the full-hack, played splendidly. Wairarapa added 9 points in this spell to their score, and Manawatu 6, the final being: Wairarapa 19, Manawatu 9. McKenzie, O'Leary and Spackman scored tries for Wairarapa, and Adams and Johnston for Manawatu. The forwards of both teams were evenly matched, but Wairarapa back, were much superior. Len Skelley played a great game for the visitors, and Ongley and Scott also shaped well in the backs. ■ Adams, " Paddy" McMinn, Archie McMinn and Johnston were the best ot the forwards.
