WATERWORKS LOAN.

Ox Monday next ratepayers will have, the opportunity afforded.them of deciding whether Palmerston is to have a water supply that will fulfil to-day's requirenients and those of : future years, or whether the town will have to struggle on in its present almost impossible state as regards the existing service. As is generally known it is proposed to borrow £26,000, details of the proposed expenditure of this sum having been lucidly explained by the Mayor at the recent public meeting at which the proposition to take a poll on the question of the: loan was carried without a. suggestion of opposition. It is, therefore, only necessary to draw attention to the urgent necessity that exists for bettering.the supply, particularly on the outskirts of the_town whore the service can hardly be dignified by that term and would be absolutely useless in case of an outbreak of fire. The proposals placed before the ratepayers are most comprehensive in regard to reticulation, and we trust to see the loaii carried by a large majority.

It is as Tvell to point out that although a special rate will have to.be struck in accordance with the Loans to Local Bodies Act, to provide security for interest on the loan, the rate will not be collected, .because the ordinary income from the water rate will be sufficient to cover the charges of the proposed loan.
