HAWERA, August 25. An elderly man named Reuben White, a well known settler at Teroti, was committed for trial on a charge of carnally knowing a girl about 15 years of age. No evidence was taken for-the defence.

Mr George Lambie, for seventeen years manager of the Union Steamship Co. here, was on the occasion of his retirement presented at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce with a purse of sovereigns. Eulogistic references were made, to thework done by Mr Lambie, the. Chairman (Mr A. L. Parsons) saying, that his retirement meant a loss to the community of a very capable, highly efficient and an extremely popular officer.

BLENHEIM, August 25. The citizens presented Thos. Orr, Union S.S. Co.'s manager here, with a token of esteem in the shape of a silver salver and a purse of 144 soys. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Penny) made the presentation. He referred to the recipient's service of 20 years in the colony and 14 in Blenheim in the employ of the Union S.S. Co., his active service in connection with cricket, music and - church work, and his reputation as a gentleman. Mr Orr remains in Blenheim.

WOpDVILLE, August 25. C. T. Gray, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was charged on two informations with using bad language at the Kumeroa races. He was fined £5 on the first charge, and £2 on the second. The magistrate made some very strong remarks on the case. He had grave doubts whether he should not inflict severer punishment, but said that as the defendant was a hotelkeeper he would probably be dealt with on a future occasion.

JS TAPIER; August 25. A company is in course of formation amongst the sheep farmers of Hawke's Bay for the purpose of purchasing the freezing and meat preserving works of Messrs Nelson Bros., Ltd., of Tomoana. The.proposed company is to be called " The Tomoana Co-operative Freezing Co., Ltd.," with a, capital of £100,000, of which £60,000 will be issued in fully paid up shares. The new company would take over the whole of the buildings, machinery, plant and business of the present company at Tomoana, together with fifty acres of land, and would undertake the freezing of sheep and cattle for shareholders and others, and also to find purchasers in London. It is proposed that all profits after the payment of a dividend of 7 per cent, be divided with shareholders on the basis of the amount of stock frozen by each individual. Guarantees have already been given for the freezing of 100,000 annually for some years, at present. 15,000 shares have been applied for. ,
