Returning them to Ciiiiia
(By Electric Telegraph-Copyright). (Per Press Association.) (Received August 19, at 10.3 a.m.) SYDNEY, This day. The Chinese here have received further particulars in regard to deported stowaways on board the Prince Waldemar. Serious allegations of cruelty are made. The Chinese asked the Nord Deutscher Uoyd Co. an what they will return the men to Hong Kong. The Company state it will cost £850. Efforts are being made to raise the money here and in Hong Kong. [Some few weeks ago the New South Wales Customs authorities discovered a number of Chinese stowed away on board a German mail boat, in an endeavour to evade the provisions of the Aliens Restriction Act, having in their possession forged clearance papers. According to the provisions of the Act, tbe captain of the steamer was under a heavy penalty if he permitted.any of the Chinese to land, and the only course open to him was to take the men back to -Hong Kong, whe nee most of them came. It is said that the Chinese residents of Sydney were given to understand that this would be done Subsequently it transpired that the men were working as convicts on the New Guineo roads. It -was asserted, that none of the men would survive twelve mornhs under such treatment, and an appeal was made to the Chinese in Australia to raise sufficient funds in order to release them. A meeting of the Chinese residents in Sydney was called for the purpose of ascertaining what steps should bo taken, and it was resolved to make an appeal to the whole of the Chinese in the Commonwealth for funds to send the men back to China, and a local committee was formed forthe purpose of carrying out details.]
