N.Z. Farmers' Union.

Wellington Provincial

Executive.

_ A meeting of the Wellington' Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union was held at Palmerston North on Thursday, August 17th. The President, Mr J. G. Wilson, was in the chair. Also present—Messrs J. C. Cooper (vicepresident), W. J. Birch (Marton), S. J. Carman (Waituna Westl, J. Peat (Wanganui), A. Robinson (Mangamahu), L. It. Jackson (Kimbolton), G-. Wheeler (Feilding), T. Quirk (Konini), T. Moss (Eketahuna), Capt. Hewitt and W.Stubbs, treasurer (Palmerston N.) Apologies were received from Messrs P. Hockley (Hunterville), W. Perry (Masterton), and H. D. Buchanan (Kumeroa). The Minister for Railways' reply re railway concessions was received. The reply.of the Department re country telephones was also received.

The Minister for Railw.-vys forwarded a reply to the resolution forwarded re bruising of stock on railways. The Minister stated in reply that sustained efforts were made to prevent as far as possible damage to live stock while in transit, and if the efforts of the Department were supplemented by stockowners, who should see that sheep were properly treated before and after transit by rail, ho was of opinion that the majority of complaints would disappear; The percentage of damage had been very much reduced by the weeding out of careless drovers and savage dogs, and by employing specialists for loading, unloading, etc.

Several of the members expressed the opinion that there was a great improvement.

The Minister for Lands acknowledged the resolution passed at the Conference re fencing rights. The Provincial Organiser forwarded satisfactory reports of the visits to the branches on the Manawatu line and Wanganui district.

Levin branch forwarded a resolution "That the Government be urged to repeal the Act allowing the Maori Council to register dogs belonging to natives."— It was pointed out that there were a large number of unregistered dogs wandering about and doing great damage. This matter has been previously urged by the Conference, but attention will be again drawn to it by the Executive.

The Executive endorsed the resolution from the Lovin branch urging the Manawatu Railway Coy. to put on a cool van for butter, etc. The motion passed at the Provincial Conference, that an Organising Committee of six be appointed to group the various branches into districts and appoint canvassers, for each, was acted upon and the following were elected as an Organising Cpminittce :—Messrs W. Perry (Mastertonj, T. Moss (Eketaliuna), and T. Quirk (Pahiatua) to represent the Wairarapa districts ; and Messrs J. Peat (Wanganui), L. R. Jackson (Kimbolton), and Capt. Hewitt (Palmerston) to represent the West Coast districts.

It was resolved that the organising fund be placed at the disposal of the Organising Committee;.

A meeting of the newly-elected Organising Committee .was subsequently held. Captaiu Hewitt was elected as Chairman, and Mr W. Stubbs as Treasurer.
