THE UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY.
Thkuk is ho institution in Now Zealand of which the public should- feel more proud than the Union Steamship Company, for the reason that it; was estaHished by colonials and brought to its present state of prosperity oy men possessing the best conception df sound management and business acumen. Among those who have largely contributed to this result is Mri James Mills, the managing director, ijnd the fact that the Company to-day possesses a fleet of steamers highly creditable to the colony is largely due to his.-tireless energy and unceasing efforts jto promote the best interests of the iinstitution with which he has been; so long identified. While the Company has brought its intercolonial service to a high state of efficiency, it has paid equal attention to .its coastal trade iiu New Zealand. The capital ferry I service between Wellington and Lytpclton is too well known to be enlarged upon, and it will be gratifying to tho ..public to learn that the service between Onehunga aud Auckland is to be improved. The fact that six new steamers are to be added ;to the fleet this year shows the onward and upward tendency of the company, also their evideiit desire to cater on the most approved lines for their fast increasing -clientehi". The public have also, no doubt, noted tlie fact that Canada lias renewed jthe subsidy paid to the company for il service with that country, and while it-is, from an Imperial point of view, gratifying intelligence, as disclosing the strong desire of the Dominion to maintain an " all-red " route, it also speaks 'Volumes for the satisfaction given by the company in fulfilling its obligations. That the *'red funnel " will continue1 to be a striking feature of shipp lug ; iu New Zealand ports is the sincere -wish of the supporters of this fine colonial institution.
