' but it might he a- matter for tha mitigation of tha penalty. The occupier of a hou3a must sat sfy himself a* t) tbe character of those who frequented it. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Wm. Gibson and John How.ley, police constables, were charged tvita having given' perjured evidence o.i February 27th during the hearing of a I charge against Jas. Kennedy of being lan idle arid disorderly person. The case j against defendants was that they had sworn to having seen Kennedy oa certain datas in Wellington, whereas he was on such occasions in another town. Each defendant was committed for.trial, bail being allowed. ' . AUCKLAND, March 29 A charge of assault arising ouc of the Premier's Tecent meeting in Auckland, brought by William B,ichard?on agtinss P. J. Nerheny, president of the looa' branch of the Liberal »nd Labour Federation, who was one of the offioiala responsible for the management of the meeting, was dismissed. THAMES. March 29. Mr McGowan will be at the Thames on April 6th to lay the foundation stone of the Public Library, being erected at a cost of £2000.
