Accidents and Fatalities
A young man named George Stead, 19 years old, was fouDd dead in his bed a* his residence, Waikiekie, near Whangarei. The cause of death is unknown. His father was killed while bushfelling a few months ago by a tree falling on him, Three visitors to Eotorua had a narrow escape from drowning last week. The party comprised Captain Sharpe, of the cable steamer Iris, Mr Darlot, a West Australian visitor, and Mr Stephenson. They were sailing in an 18ft open boat called the Karrakalta, and were almost becalmed about noon, when a squa 1 suddenly came down from ihe direction of the Fairy Spring stream. Another gust next came from the opposite direction, and this capsized the boat. The occupants were thrown into the water some distance from land, and but for the timely arrival of a Maori in a canoe the affair would have terminated fatally, as Captain dharpe was very much exhausted and had to be supported by Mr Stephenson. The three gentlemen were subsequently taken to the Lake House Hotel, and soon recovered from the effects of the immersion. Clothing and fbhing tackle valued at £20 was lost through ihe up. set.
