DAIRY EXCHANGE.
The proposal made by Mr John Holmes, of Wellington, to establish a dairy exchange in Palinerston has been warmly endorsed by the Council of the Chamber of Commerce which has appointed an influential conirnittee to investigate and furnish a report upon the question at an early date. The decision is a wise one, particularly in view of the enormous saving in time and expense—as well as more methodical management—that will follow the establishment of an exchange. From the views expressed by members of the Council of the Chamber yesterday there appears little doubt that the report will be favourable to the institution of the business, and value is likely to be added to the report by the suggested conference of delegates from dairy companies upon the subject. They, with the merchants and traders, can hardly fail to welcome any scheme that will be conducive to better and more satisfactory business regulations. It is worthy of note that the Boyal Commission that has for months past been taking evidence upon the dairy produce exports from Victoria has strongly recommended the establishment of a Butter Exchange, and no more convincing argument could be used in favour of Mr Holmes' proposal. It is also interesting to note that the Cork Butter Exchange, probably the oldest in the world, dates from 1769 when grading and classification of butter, under competent experts, first began in Ireland. It has continued up to the present day, and has, undoubtedly, proved a great benefit to the country in which it was instituted. We trust that those interested in the dairying industry will aid the Chamber of Commerce in its efforts to have an Exchange established in this district, and that the scheme will be in operation before the commencement of the next
dairying season,
