Burglary in the Square
An entrance was effected into Messrs De Luen Bros.' shop in the Square last night,'the., front door of the premises beingj.discovered open by the policeman on duty at five o'clock this morning. The door was evidently forced by some heavy instrument, the side of the door showing pronounced marks where the instrument was inserted. The pressure exerted broke the lock, an ordinary American one. The pressure must have been very considerable, because brass rods in the windows adjoining the door were displaced from their sockets. The safe was untouched, and evidently its location was not discovered by the burglars. Boxes of ties were found strewn on the floor of the shop this morning, but, apparently, nothing of any value . has been taken, the- thieves evidently being after money, riot clothes';- : A rumour was, ; also, current m town this morning that premises at Terrace End had been burglariously entered during the night, but the statement is not confirmed by the police to whom no occurrence of the description stated has been reported.
An entrance was also effected into the S.M. Court office, the lock of one of the back doors being broken from pressure exerted outside. Drawers in the clerk of the court's office were tampered with, but no plunder was secured. The strong room was not , attacked. Over £100 was banked yesterday, and money received . after banking hours was safely deposited by Mr Matravers. A drawer in which there was a sum of private money was overlooked by the midnight visitors. A lock was, also, forced off one of the cupboards in the solicitors' room, but nothing more entertaining than wigs and gowns was found there
