Teachers' Salaries.
(Per Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Oct 24. At a meeting of the local branch of the Educational Institute, after discussion, a resolution was passed with reference to the Teaohers' Salaries Bill that the Premier be asked to increase the salaries of second male assistants by £50, and tbe salaries of other assistants below second by £25, thus making the maximum for second assistants in Otago £180, and tbe minimum for a junior male £105. By raising the second assistant's salaries by the amount stated there will no longer be a necessity for weakening the staff by dispensing with pupil teachers.
The meeting of the executive of the Dunedin and Suburban Sohool Committee Conference passed a resolution that, While expressing satisfaction with the proposal to improve tbe condition of male assistants other than first, the Conference is strongly of opinion that the case of second male assistants has not bßen properly dealt with, for the reasons that these assistants have to teaob one of the most important standards in all the large schools, and in addition they have the oversight of outdoor work, including drill, swimming and sports. The Conference is of opinion that the minimum salary attached to the position of second assistant in large town schools should be £180, rising to £200. The Conference points out that the average length of service of the second male assistant in the Dunedin City Schools exceeds 20 years.
