Ashhurst Notes.

(From Our 6wh v Correspondo. it)i_; Messrs, S: RumbleY and ; Thos. ■ Lowes, J.'sP., were engaged^ the greater part of Monday, iv hearing evidence.in connection with a. charge brought 'by. tbe police against a youthof discharging explosives in a public place.;lt appears that at 10 p.m.for three or four nights in succession loud reports Were heard^m the direction of the triangle opposite the Commercial: Hotel. The regularity of the explosions Upset nervous people^ and made: others ;inquisitive, with the result that the Constable and several residents kept Vigil and discovered, that the mysterious" reports trom-this miniature Waimangu were caiised by an impromptu bomb 'consist-' in-?u° t lemonado bottle full of powder with fuse attached.- The evidence covered a number of sheets of foolscap and resulted in the case being dismissed, likewise those inthe know shook themselves by the hand. However, the tacts -remain -that the explosives were ignited by some lively « spark," that the jokers have had their jolce.'and residents have had enough. There's no real fun m Court cases unless you are oh the bench, but .there's an undesirable element of danger- to the public when glass bottles are/rammed to-the neck with explosives and then setoff. It is more than probable that the jokers intended to do no harm; however— ,

When Thomas Jenkins took the gun And pointed it at Jones ,"' The gun went off, and Jones was done. And loud were Jenkins' groans. Poor Jenkins he was deeply pained, _ His grief caused much alarm, But still he carefully explained He meant to do no harm.

_ The ordinary monthly meeting of the' Domain Board was held on Monday .evening;- Present: Messrs J: H. Vincent(chairman),. Thos. Lowes, G. S. Bumble.and-P. Hanlon. The -Under-Secretary for Department of Lands,. .forwarded •■ a copy of Domain Boards Act passed last August.—Received.

_ The Cemetery Trustees mot immediately after the above, Mr Thomas Lowes chairman. Accounts amounting to £4 were passed for payment, and it was decided to authorise the caretaker, to paint the house.- The matter of disposing of the grass in .the cemetery was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary to deal with.

_ The recent flood in the river did not improve the ferry at the lower Gorge. A large shingle bank divides the river into two streams, and it is only with'great difficulty that vehicles can be conveyed across.'

Mr J. Clapham, pupil teacher here for some time, has been transferred to Feilding. ; Mr J; Aitken takes. Mr Clapham's place.

Of late sickness in o_}e form or another has been a frequent visitor to the Watershed road locality. Mesdames Morine Bassett and Coker and Messrs Rowling an* Hockley are indisposed. Residents will be pleased to hear of their speedy recovery. .
