Government Fear Defeat,

Intense interest-as being taken iv the contest for the Pahiatua seat, and last evening political addresses were delivered! in Pahiatua. No hail being available, Sir -J. G. Ward addressed an audience in a livery stable adjacent to one of the hotels, while Mr T. Taylor, M.H.R. for Christchurch, addressed an open-air meeting. The former spoke in defence of ■the Government and in favour of Mr Buick's candidature, while the latter advocated the cause of Mr Hawkins. Mr Taylor had the larger audience. Each party had shorthand writers at the other's meeting, n/-tes of the remarks being handed to the speakers who replied where necessary. .

It is said that during- his speech Mr'Taylor, stated aliat if the ..Government coiiM 'decide which they would prefer to have, a . seat in Parliament, the devil or Mr Hawkins, the Government would prefer his Satanic M ajesty.

From a private sour.cc we learn that Mr Hawkins'prospects' of elccV tion are. very gocd, the bulk of the people in- Pahiatua, judging- from last evening's meetings, being in favour of his candidature. Mr Lanrenson, M.H.E. for Lyttcl•toii, was present at Sir J. Ward's meeting, and spoke in favour of the Government policy. (Per Press Association). PAHIATUA, July 2S.
