Institute v. Palmerston.

Both teams had all their available •'fighting" strength in the field: The game was rather tough, and though on any other occasion it would ha\e attracted many spectators, it was practically decided in the presence of about half-a-dozen sp&ctators. The play at the commencement was rather slow, and it seemed as if both teams would not settle down to work, the frantic yells of tho spectator.! during the progress of the match on the oval disconcerting them. This feeling soon wore off, and it was not long before both teams were down to business. The play hovered about half way fora considerable time, tho backs of both teams using tho touch-line effectively. Palmerston forwards starred a rush, headed by Horgan, who secured possession on the goal-line and dived acrosß just at the corner. Tyrell placed a beautiful goal. Palmerston 5, Institute nil. Institute kicked off and pressed. Palmerston for some time, but the Biaek's were soon hovering in the Greens' territory, and Furrie narrowly escaped scoring The remainder of tho spell did not bring any further score although the backs and forwards of both teams put in some splendid work. The second spell opened in a more lively fashion, and those who witnessed the match, saw some splendid passing between the opposing backs. The Greens at this stage were pressing their opponents very closely when Cox secured the leather and beating a couple of his opponents crossed the line. -"Tiny" McMinn just missed the Kick at goal. Palmers-'ou 5, Institute 3. Biacks came' away with another fine rush and carried the ba'l in close proximity to the Greens' goal, hut by judicious kicking on the part of the defenders the play was removed outside the danger zone. At this juncture the Institute forwards, with a fast forward rush, carried the ball to within a few feet of the goal liu B| where a scrum took place, and Lutton gaiciing possession tricked a couple of his opponents and passed out to E. Baker, who scored near the corner. .A.rch. McMinn, though unsuccessful ia his effo»t to place a goal, made a fins tick. Prom this out to th'o end Palmerston had slightly the advantage, and just on the call of time narrowly escaped scoring. • The Institute backs all played safe, Stalker putting in some fine work, and Jack Baker is always on the move ; he kicks and collars in fine style. Val. Scott should very nearly catch, the eve' of the selector as centre-threequartcr on his Saturday's play. V. Penman and B. Baker showed improved form and Lutton played his best game this season. The forwards are good iv the loose, but on the line out and scrum work are not what they oughtto b«. Archie MeMinn played a sound game as did also Boon and Cox. Adams, Karton, Sweeney and Uuah worked hard.

The Pulineraton oaohs were hardly up to the form expected of them, buc at tim& played well. Tjbsic airangymcnfe seems to bo wrong.. Their csutrolino should bo changed. Furrie does net get the ebanocs ho onght so, for be is a player that wants plenty'of .work, ilcCarty is ous of his place; ho plays

better at ?scrum half, while Horace Hewitt is good no matter where he » placed. Tyrell h*a not straak hia last year a form yet. Franciß.Hawitt played a. a-ife game at full. Of the forwards, B. Wingate, Horgan, Fraser and' Bates were tho pick. Mr SUiott made an efficient referee. . ';

The championship matches will conclude next Saturday, and it is sugnested that as the season is hardly started, that another round be playsd, the Union presenting caps to the winning team. Next Saturday's match should prove one of the most interesting of the season, for the Old Boys' life in the championship depends" on their winning, while the Institute team have been beaten in eJ e% m£ tcll they have played against the Old Boys this season, and. they are determined to turn the tables on the Old Boys in their next effort, if possible.
