CAPETOWN, May 20. Botha and the members of_the Pretoria Congress had a friendly interview with Sir A. Lawley, Lieut.Governor of the Transvaal, at Raadal.
Sir A. Lawley, whose attitude' was firm but conciliatory, remarked that the Government was under no obligation to compensate the Boers for war losses. It had simply promised assistance. Already ten millions had been spent. He hoped the claims of protected burghers and British subjects would be settled within a week. He did not object to reasonable requests for arms as a protection.' He advised the Boers, where members . of the civil service made mistakes, to frankly submit the facts to the Government aisdnqt btood over an isolated error and boil it up into a griev ( an«e.
