The Palmerston Post Office

A Chief Post Ofiice Refused.

Ministerial Opinion.

We are indebted to Mr W T l°lt M- Ri- R -'iorr^y°Zlttl Ward JP 5 eCCir cC* fr°m Sir Joseph in + l o, stmaster-General, relative to the Palmerston Post Office, the Minister says :-" Referring to tho request of the deputation introduced 80th°\. at ? al«°n North on tbe JOth March, that the post office there be constituted a chief post ofiice, I regret, after carefully eon-" sidenng the position, that I am unable to see my way at present to meet the wishes of the deputation in the matter. There are many other largo sub-offices in the colony where the inconvenience of being unable to obtain savings bank withdrawals immediately on application is as great, and, in some instances, greater than at Palmerston worth and the desired change could not well be made at the latter place without granting the same privilege at others. I would1 point out that any savings bank withdrawal of an urgent nature can be made in an hour or two by means of a teWram and ordinary withdrawals in about twenty-four hours by post. It may be mentioned that not only in England, but also irt Scotland and Ireland, all savings bank withdrawals have to be arranged through the head money order office in London, ll is considered, therefore, that, compared with tho facilities in the United Kingdom, there should not be much cause for complaint in the present instance,'*
