The Telephone Exchange.
(To-tho Editor}
Sir, —Will you kindly allow me a small space in your valuable jour- , nai to reply to " Ring up's " letter in Friday's issue. As a frequent user of the' telephone I am pleased to say that one gets very prompt attention from the attendants at the local office, and that lately they compare more than favourably with the larger centres. It is very rarely that one has to ring more than twice, and in, most cases the second ring is probably due to one's own impatience as it is only .natural the attendants will get every one connected as quickrty as possible. Taking •" Ring up's " letter in detail I presume he (or she) is not a subscriber, or he (or she) would Tiave given his (or her) own experience. Yiou will notice it was not " Ring up " who had to ring ten times, but someone " Ring up " knows. How good it is of '•' Ring up " to ventilate his friend's grievance. ' !
Will " Ring up " explain what is meant by "all concerns of a competitive nature." Was the competition to see which could get most " swears '■', in before getting connected, and " Ring np " was disappointed to find that someone else could beat him even at1 this ror which he imagined he was a champion.
Further, if " Ring up " were a subscriber, or even a frequent user. of tbd telephone lie wonld knO|W that one never gets a"Hello-' from the local office.
_ In ccmclusvon, let me suggest that if " Ring up " h a s a complaint to ma,ke about a public office he should put his complaint through the official sources, and put his naino to it, and no doubt it would receive -due consideration. , _" Ring up " is probably, a w a re ot the fact that the attendants at the local oflice, are principally girls, and further that they cannot reply to an attack through a newspaper, so he boldly attacks—under a norn de plume.'. Tn the meantime let,me advise "Ring up " to "ring off" "ntil he is prepared to put his name to his letter. I am, etc., A. JACKSON.
