Borough Council.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor and Crs Armstrong, Pringle, I Essex, Hay don, J. M. Johnston, France j and Jack. COBKESrONDENCE. From J. Inder, asking the Council to gravel his footpath and entrance. No action taken. From A. E. Whitehead offering to advance the money to extend the watsr to Botanical-road. Referred to the Public Works Committee with, power to act. From the Fire Brigade asking for the usual subsidy. Finance Committee to pay amount. From P. Hutson and Co., explaining, that the delay in forwarding pipes was due to the holidays and stating the contract would be adhered to in future. Referred to Public Works Committee ; engineer to report upon question of pipes. From the Boad Inspector, Pahiatua, stating that the application for price of road grader had been sent to the Government. From the Treasury with subsidy on rates. From E. White, rubbish, removal contractor, complaininc; of the Council's treatment of him in regard to his contract ; also asking for payment of arrears. —Referred to the Finance Committee From A. Britain, Chnstchureh, offering, as agent, to quote prices for either bridges or stone breakers. From the Chairman Half Holiday Association, asking that Wednesday be fixed as the week y half holiday. From G. H. Colgrove, offering to sell printing machine for £12 net cash. —Referred to the Finance Committee EEPOBTS. A meeting of the Public Works Committee was held on the 11th inst. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Council to require Mr D. Mathieson to metal the streets he desires to be taken over as public streets, 38 feet wide, and to kerb, tar, and sand the footpaths in accordance with the council's conditions ; that Mr A. Bennett's application for relaxation of the building bye-laws on behalf of Mr L. Simmons could not be granted ; that the area of the sections in Battstreet are too small, and the council decline to consent to the laying off of the street as all sections should have an area of at least a quarter of an acre; that applications be invited for the position of Inspector of Buildings. Another meeting wa3 held 011 the 18th instant. Resolved to recommend that the Engineer be instructed to re-tar the footpath oa the northern side of Mam-sireet east, and all other previously tarred paths be done again us far as the supply of tar will permit; that the footpath in George-street, on the side nearest the Square, be tarred and sanded; that the crossings at the street junctions in Main-street west be tarred and sanded, also the crossings at the Railway Station, after being raised with screened gravel; that the Gas Company manager be requested to properly repair footpaths where gas connections have been made, and to forward to the Council all complaints of lamps being out of order. 3USCELLANBOUS. The Mayor was appointed to represent the council at the election of a member to the Wellington Harbour Board. A motion that he be recommended to support Mr W. T. Wood, M.H.8., at the election was lost on a division by two votes to six. Wednesday was fixed as the current half holiday "for the year. Cr Jack considered the matter should not be made an annual question for the council but should be settled, either f&r Saturday or Wednesday, by legislation. It was decided to take over Walde-grave-street as a public street. The portion of the Public Works report dealing with Mr Simmons' application for a relaxation oi building regulations, was further considered. Cr Johnston moved, that Mr Simmons' request be granted subject to the back and side walls being built of iron and that the owner of the freehold give a legal undertaking to keep the right-of-way open until a brick wall is erected for fire prevention purposes. The motion was seconded by Cr. Jack and lost.
