Poll for an Australian Eleven.

.;' Recently the Melbourne Argus conducted a cricket ballot for an eleven to represent Australia against Warner's team. Altogether 763 votes were received, and of these Hill got all but four. The voting was as follo,ws :—C. Hill (S.A.), 759 ; V. Trumper .(N.S.W.)', 755 ; W. Armstrong (V.), 752 ; R. A. Duff (N.S.W.), 749 ;. M. A. Noble (N.S:TC.), 746 ; J. J. Kelly (N.S.W.), 584 ; 'F. Layer (V.), 555 ; J. V. Saunders - (V.), 547 ; A. J. Hopkins (N.S.W.), 441 ; C. Jennings (S.A.), 409; W. P. Howell (N.S.W.), 288 ; emergencies —J. Marsh (N.S.W.), 282 ; J. Travers (S.A.), 246; F. T. Hack (S.A.), 218.

When the Australians were Home in 18S4- the Sportsman invited its readers to send in their opinion as to the team to represent England in the match at the Oval. Thirteen men received over 1000 votes, as follows :— W. G. Grace, 320(5 ; Steel, 3011 ; Ulyett, 2942 ; PeaU, 2850 ; Barnes, 2563 ; Studd 2374 ; Lucas, • 2218 ; Lyttelton, 2147 ; Barlow, 1984 ; Lord Harris, 1976 ; W. W. Head,ls2B ; Shrewsbury, 1393 ; O'Brien, 1350. The team that actually played consisted of Grace, Scotton, Barnes, Shrewsbury, Steel, Ulyett, Barlow, Harris, Lyttelton, AY. W. Head and Peate. The only outsider, therefore, was Scotten, who played the innings of his life. The Australians scored 551 (Murdoch, 221, McDonnell, 103, Scott, 102) ; said the Englishmen 346 (Read, 117 and Scottoin 90) and 86 for two wickets, the match being drawn.
