CLOSE SETTLEMENT.
There is a rich block of land ■at Long-1 burn, comprising 122 aores, which Mr i \E. J, Biddiford holds under lease from 1 the Wellington School Commissioners. The Commissioners are anxious , thiV legislation should be passed enabling' them to use a portion of their revenue in snbdiyiding the block into small sections; and constructing the necessary roads/sb that the land could be offered for sale. There are a number of industrious working men in the Longburn district who would jump at the chance of getting possession of such sections, but the Government for some reason that has not yet been explained, have an objection to. alter the law to enable the Commissioners to eive effect to their wishes, despite a promise made by Mr Seddon that the request would be acceded to. j It was hoped that the legislation referred to would have been passed last sestion, but nothing was done m the matter, and the Commissioners at their last meeting had no option but to renew the lease to Mr Eiddiford for another year. The bidck is only a small one, bnt its sub-division would assist settlement in the district, which fact ought to weigh with the Government.
