The Chronicle says :—rahnerston. North is not the only borough in which it has boon l'oumi diiiicult to swear in the newly-elected Council. On the 9th of April the North-East N alloy Council aholishecl the wards in the borough, with the result that all the councillors then went out of oiliee. On Monday night the newly-elected councillors assembled for the purpose of transacting the ordinary business of the council, but found themselves in the rather unique, position of not being able to do so, 'for the reason that there was no one present, to swear them in. The Mayor elect was present, but as he does not take up his duties until the .second week in May he was powerless to assist in the required, direction. The retiring Mayor unfortunately had not turned up, he, it being stated, being of opinion that he also was out of 'oilice. After consulting legal opinions and the provisions of the Act Councillors thought otherwise, and it was decided, after debate, to send out one of the members to elfdeavour to hunt him up. In this lie was successful, and in twenty minutes to nine the councillors present made the usual declaration and took their seats, after which the business was proceeded with.
