The first round for the Dawick Shield and tho Mauawatu Hockey Association's Championship was commenced at the Showground yesterday afternoon. There was a fairly large attendance, the public evidently beginning to take a keener interest in this game, a fact which may bo attributed to the exciting finish to last year's championship. Yesterday's . marches, however, were rather uninteresting, the state of the ground, and the lack of condition and combination being mainly responsible. In individual play several of the new ■players showed up well, and in the course of a week or two wo may ■anticipate some close finishes. OLD BOYS v. MIDLAND. Neither of these teams showed their true form, though they were evenly matched, as the result—a draw, neither side scoring—indicates.
