Amongst the many experiments tried in America for keeping.. the dust down in the public streets, the most successful has been the application of crude petroleum oil. This system has even extended to conservative England, and the result has been most satisfactory. Mr J. W. Metcalf, surveyor of the town of Newmarket, commenced operations with oil as a dust-laying agent in 1901. On Ist April, he chose a piece of main road on the outskirts of the town, some 300 superficial yards long, and on tbjs he had crude petroleum sprinkled allowing one.gallon of the liquid to each ten superficial -yards. The season was very dry, but it was found that the one application, costing about a halfpenny per square yard, sufficed to lay the dust, and no further sprinkling of the oil or water was necessary during the whole of the summer. The surveyor considered the results sufficiently satisfactory to warrant further experiments in other localities, although it is very necessary to exercise great'cai"e in tbe selection of the crude petroleum or other agent employed:
