Last evening the Rev I. Jolly delivered the fical lecture of this term in connection with his English litorature class at St. Andrew's aohoolroom. Tho subject chosen was " The manliness of the genius of Barns." The lecturer, in opening, treated of tho poet's place in English literature, describing him as being the first to bring us back to a natural method in poetry after the highstrong, artificial style of Pope and Drydon. Ho then spoko of him as tho poet of the common - people, and proceeded to defend his character, wbioh by quotations from hit writings, he showed to be manly to a degree. The leoiure was a great intellectual treat and was most attentively listened to by all present,

There was only a small attendance of ratepayers at the meeting oalled lait night at the Fire Brigade Hall to consider tho proposal to borrow j£86,000 (or sewerage works in: the Borough. Tho Mayor, Mr W. T. Woo* occupied the chair and explained the details of the scheme, bis remarks being supplemented by Cr Armstrong, who has taken considerable interest in the matter.
