Sir J. G. Ward explained thnt tha Bill rrnvded for payment of the saino pmouni of subsidy, viz. £23,000, to tho Auitrala-ian navy as had bltheito been paid. On tho motion c ■! Sir J. G. Ward, the following Bills were introduc?d and read a first tisne :—Pharmacy Act Amendment, Law Societies, end Companies Act Amendment.

Tho Public Petitions Committee reported on :hc petition ot I). Brenr, who prayed for relief on account of his salary being reduced and his services being dispensed with by thn Otago High School Boa-d. The Committee referred the petition to tho Board for favourable consideratioo. Tho report was adopted.

■With regard to the petition praying for consideration for John Rosb, of Lyttelton, who bad been tor 88 years a school teacher, the Public Petitions Committee had no recommendation' to make.

Mr Laurc-nson moved that this report be referred back to the Committee for consideration. He urged the circutnstancps of the caso were such as to warrant it being referred to the favourable notice of the Government.

A shcrt discussion took place in which Thos. MoK.-nzie, Hogg, Meredith, Eli, Monk, and Willis took part, the opinion being generally expressed that theso two c*ses provided strong justification for a School Teachers' SupernDnuaiion Bill being gone on with this session. Mr B. McKenzie protested against the waste of time involved in referring the rtport back to tho committee.

Mr ,?yme3, chairman ot committee, spoke to a similar effect, a'jd said thcro was no Biini arity between the two cases. Mr Laurenson's amendment wss ioat by 86 to 26, and the report was ordered to Ho on the tablo.

On tho motion of Sir J. G. Ward a Select Committee of 22 members wat se: up to consider tho Municipal Corporations Acs Amendment Bill. In reply to questions Ministers stated: That there was not the slightest intention of remitting (be fines imposed for the csle of the diseased stock. That at the present time there were 50,000 acres in the Korib Island open for selection by would-be settlers. That the Government conld not see its way this seerion to exsmpt from stamp duty cheque* used in the service of the Education Hoards. That the Government could not hold out out any hope this "csnon of providing funds for the erection of a museum for Maori antiquities, but every other step was being taken to tnsute semething being done at an early dare. That it was not intended to place a vot« on the Supplementary Estimates this session to enable Edacation Boards to defray the necessary expense* of School Committees. That the rolease of F. T. Moor* was decided upon on the merits of the case, and could not in any way be regirded as a precedent.

The House rose at 5.50. The House met at 7.30. The Land Transfer Act Amendment Bill was p«sed through committee. The Accident Insurance Compairei BiM passed through committee. In committee on the Land Titles Protection Bill, an amendment to the effect that the power allowing cases to bt> brought; sbesid be vested in a Judge of the Supreme Court instead of the Govemoc-in Council, was lost by 43 to 11.

Sir J. "Ward was ex'iinlried to-day for two hours before ihe Commiitee of the Legislative Council, to whom ihe Government Railways Superacnuaiion Bill has benn referred.
