MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD AND POHANGINA GAZETTE. Circulation, 3,800 Copies Daily WEDNESDAY SEPT. 17, 1902. PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS.

It is a singular fact that the people of Palmerston do not readily respond to subscriptions for outside purposes. ' nly a few pounds wero raised here lor tho Seddon testimonial, nothwithstandinr' tho efforts made on behalf of the supporters of that gentleman, anc. now the subscriptions for the 'Veterans' Home are coming in at a snail-like pace, and it is hardly possible that Lord Banfurly's scheme will receive much monetary support from our midst. It must be admitted that residents have a great many calls on their private means, nearly every local institution being'supported to a certain extent out of funds raised by canvassers, and therefore it would seem that the drains aro severe enough without contributing to outside purposes. We believe this district is as rich, and as large, and the people as comfortably off as in towns There the sums for both purposes inentioucd have been ten times as much. Thi? eyidefitl_ points to the conclusion tlmt as a people Palmerstoniaus aro cold in subscribing to movements that do not appe_l to their immediate interests. The liberal manner in which the townspeople donate their money io local affairs, shows that they cannot be very short of funds. Indeed, the promoters of every institution who have made a call on their purses, speak in the highest terms of their promptness in responding. In regard to the Veterans' Home, an impression prevails that the Government should have placed a substantial sum on th estimates for the purpose. Another reason wj^y subscriptions have not been so prompt is that no silo has been fixed for the building. We feel sure when the_ Veterans' Homo has become an accomplished fact,- the people of this district will be the first • to contribute to its support.
