Tlio Berlin Church Synod some titnc ago caused ;i graab Ecusation by openly discussing iho growing depravity cf the Berlin youth ol both sexes. It Foems Hint although churches are being multiplied in the capital, the Church is fast losing its intiupneo on the people, and ospeci illy oo tbo rising generation, a fact whie'i the delegates at tbo Synod prefer to ascribe primarily to extraneous influences. Tho Socialists ate blamed for oducatiug their cbildrm io ci.-dam authority and piety, ar.d mothers are taken to task for being indifferent to the dangers run by their daughters The Roman Cntbolic c'orgy avo described as keeping n sharp If okout on children of mixed marriages. The universal practice is condemned of parents keeping their children out late at night in rosturant3. Finally, the startling statement is made thit one marriage oat of every twelve contracted in Berlin v lo'lowel by divorce Tho Fynod u'tiniately passed a series of rcEO'utions calling the attention of tho secular authorities to the danger to public morality occasioned by low-cla*3 variety theatre 3 and music haild, which are increasing at an alarming rato nil over Berlin. A resolution w.w aha passed urging the police ti clo?e all restnrants and pnhlic houses during church time on Sunday ri>orniag3 ; but this has created such a stoni of protest from tho publicans that it will no doubt prove futile. ,- A few examples of tho application 'of scientific education, in (rermany are given in tho joarnul of the Society of Arts. The piipat industry jfl the first illustration of the prpgre3s of industry th ough ueicnee. In 1840. 151,000 tons of b.itroot were crushed, from which 8000 ions of jaw sugar waie produce;!, showing about 5A- percent of raw siig.r extracted from thy root !fwen<y jears later 1,600,000 lons woro tioakd, which produced 120,00 tens of r.ugar, or about 8 per cout. Last year abont 12,000,000 wero crushed, which produced 1,500,000 tona of taw BUgur, raiding tho percentage to Jft. This advance is due entirely to scientific treatment, The produc tion of dry colors .chemicals and dyes in Germany shows a corresponding incroase in production and dividend-paying capaciiy.oity. The great increase of earning capacity is due largely to the constant labour of trained men, who by application of their technical knowledge, have so cheapened production that they have succeeded in getting this trade out of the hands which previously controlled it.
