Ashhurst.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

To-morrow (Tuesday) is the day on which ratepayer- nre requested to cast their votes ia favor of the loan for improvements, and completion of the roads in Nos. <! and 7 Wards of the Manchester Road District. The township and suburbs of Ashhurst practically constitute No. 7 Ward and the loan provides for the expenditure of some £100 in improving the streets and roads therein Such an improvement as this will make should commend itself to ratepayers who believe in the advancement of the township.

In No. 6 Ward much-needed alterations are to be made in the grading, etc., of soveral roads, independent pf better facilities required by different settlers (o net to «■ nd frotn their holdings, and of the roads to bo mide to complete the roadingof the Ward. Works that re ceived the commendation of ratepayers* 'mcnadiately the sciieiu-e of vrorks appeared were the r"-gradine; and widening of the junction of the Biirmythorpe and old Napier roads, and the fencing ami diverting of the Spur road. On be th those roads many accidents have occuired, some of a serious nature, one on the Spur road especially being very near fatal. No doubt ratepayers recollect the accident to which wo allude ; if if has slipped their memory fit!] pirtirmhr? can bo obtained from Mr Whitafc'ir.

Arguments as>amsttho loan are in the main not of a very convincing nature, some argue that they have a good road pa-it their doar and don't need n;n other, but we think tho faefc of thorn being in so fortunate a position should stimulate them to vote for the loan mid ns3Ht their 'sss fortunate brother ratepayers. If ratepayer* in the past had taken their view of tho matter would they have had the good road past their door of which they aro now justly proiJ. Wo know othei-3 arguo that if certain other roads wero included in th'j schedule they would vo's for tho loan. Well there is nothing liko askinp (it a lot but nevertheless half a loaf is better than noae, and if we cannot &', thcpre*ens moment have our own particular road wo should not vote against the other fe'low getting his. It is far easier to m-ik9 one short road out of general rates than it is to ranks twenty long ones, and with carrying the loan thero is more chance 'if tha road being ruadi* than thero will bo if tho loan is defeated. If this loan is not carrind we understand it will be about six years before tho two wards cad pariie-pati) in another. Tbe polling booth fo; No. 7 Ward is thn Thoitiv lioya!, Aslihur<=t.
